General Discussion / Leadership Project

I am super excited about an upcoming event, where I can implement my plans for the Leadership Project we have been assigned.  The Auburn office will be taking part with an event sponsored by Auburn Housing Authority, where vendors are invited to share information regarding available services for their residents.  Our staff will be in attendance to educate Auburn Housing residents about CNA services, as well as giving me the perfect opportunity to educate all ages with Make Your Plate- Nutritional Education information. Sarah Russell, Region D Dietician, shared with me some large versions of the Make Your Plate handouts that visually teach plate portions, beneficial types of food choices, exercise choices, as well as limiting screen time to encourage better health.   We have been told that 300 people were in attendance last year, so we are planning for a great outcome.

I agree with you Dechelle that is very important to be aware of any bias when interacting with others.  I have had interactions at work that I realized I was biased and had to catch myself so I would not make decisions that would be unfair in that instance.

This post encourages me to do some self-reflection and to keep in mind how important it is as a leader to be aware of your biases and to strive not to act upon them. I think it’s also important to examine why you have the particular bias anyway.  If you are conscious of the bias, I also think it will be valuable to your team to work through them so that you can always demonstrate in your actions fairness among others.

General Discussion / Trust Assignment
« Last post by drewburk on August 10, 2018, 01:14:46 pm »
Hey team,

I know I haven't talked about it but hopefully you have been working on your trust assignment.  In case you have forgotten, you are to be working on a workplace relationship that you either think has low trust or you would like to see more trust.  This person can be a direct report, a peer, or a leader.  The key will be to try and do something/say something/give something different in an attempt to improve the relationship.  You don't have to go out of the way to do something (unless that is the strategy) but just through your everyday interactions.  Make some observations regarding what you did and what response you have received.  You may even want to be willing to be vulnerable and tell the person that you want to work towards building more trust.  Being direct and transparent is usually a good idea.  We will talk about this at the beginning of class.

P.S. If you haven't started on this yet, no worries.  You have 2 weeks to try something new and make some observations!

As I read your post, vivid memories of live examples came to my mind, where I have allowed a quick comment or statement to be shared, leading to a loss in trust of my true character and convictions.
I have tried very hard to learn from those events, but in some instances, it is very hard to correct even the slightest of mistakes.  Far too many times, people only remember those small moments, instead of the all the other positive comments or actions that have taken place over the long haul.

Guilty!

I often think after I say something...."why did I say that".  I agree perception is everything. We have to be careful as to what we write, text and speak because that is how others are going to see us.  Even when we are frustrated, we need to be careful at what we say.  I was guilty just yesterday and now hoping that it doesn't come back to bite me.

General Discussion / Thoughts on Trust, Bias, and Communication

Hey guys,

Some random leadership thoughts.  I like to follow the news despite the fact that it depresses me greatly.   The hot topic of the day is the FBI agent who is testifying before Congress that was kicked off of the Mueller probe because of some text messages that demonstrated some bias in his thought processes.  Now, this topic is NOT to talk about politics but rather share my feelings what I think it means as leaders.  I said in the class that as leaders, we are judged on our actions and not our thoughts.  I still believe this to be true.  The problem in this case is that his thoughts DID become actions: the text messages.  Everyone has bias.  This is just the result of living a life and having experiences.  Now he contends that his thoughts/bias did not play any role in his official actions as a FBI agent.  I don't think anyone has the ability to factually confirm or refute this claim, but his actions of sending the biased text messages created the PERCEPTION that bias could play a role in his business related decisions.  The impact of this is almost just as bad as if he had actually allowed bias to drive his actions.

Think about your "informal" communication that you have had.  I think many of us at sometime or the other may have said or written something in private or confidence that might have been just a little unprofessional.  If they were all of a sudden made public, what impact could this have on those who rely on you to be fair and equal?  As leaders, we need to keep in mind that our communications are actions and can have a huge impact for those around us on how they perceive us.  Perception is reality because whether or now you allowed bias to enter into your work, those around you who do perceive you as biased will treat you as one not worthy of trust.

What do you guys think?
